The Google AdWords program has become one of the most popular ways to advertise on the Internet. Its companion program, Google AdSense, has in turn become one of the most popular ways to earn advertising revenue for your website.
Together, Google AdWords and Google AdSense make up two sides of the game. Here is how the Google AdWords and Google AdSense game works.
With Google AdWords, you pay Google to advertise for their keywords in Google AdWords ads. The Google AdWords ads are shown in two places:
- On Google's search engine results pages (SERP's) for those keywords
- On other people's websites that are members of Google's AdSense program and that have those keywords in their content

So how do you win the Google AdWords and Google AdSense game? There are two ways:
The first way is to be on the Google AdWords side of the game, where you pay for advertising. If you make more money from sales resulting from the Google AdWords ads than you spend on advertising, you win. This can be quite profitable, if you can succeed. After all, how often would you trade $1 to get $2? As often as possible, right?
This isn't always as easy as it sounds. It is possible to lose quite a bit of money before you learn how to play the Google AdWords side of the game. Many people wind up spending more for advertising than they profit from sales. You have to be patient and persistent, and you have to watch your numbers. You have to cancel the campaigns that aren't working and improve the ones that are.

Why Should You Use Google Sitemaps?
Until Google Sitemaps was released in the summer of 2005, optimizing a site for Google was a guessing game at best. A website's page might be deleted from the index, and the Webmaster had no idea why. Alternatively, a site's content could be scanned, but because of the peculiarities of the algorithm, the only pages that would rank well might be the "About Us" page, or the company's press releases.
As webmasters we were at the whim of Googlebot, the seemingly arbitrary algorithmic kingmaker that could make or break a website overnight through shifts in search engine positioning. There was no way to communicate with Google about a website - either to understand what was wrong with it, or to tell Google when something had been updated.
That all changed about a year ago when Google released Sitemaps, but the program really became useful in February of 2006 when Google updated it with a couple new tools.
Google SitemapsSo, what exactly is the Google Sitemaps program, and how can you use it to improve the position of your website? Well, there are essentially two reasons to use Google Sitemaps:
1. Sitemaps provide you with a way to tell Google valuable information about your website
2. You can use Sitemaps to learn what Google thinks about your website
What You Can Tell Google About Your Site
Believe it or not, Google is concerned about making sure webmasters have a way of communicating information that is important about their sites. Although Googlebot does a pretty decent job of finding and cataloging web pages, it has very little ability to rate the relative importance of one page versus another. After all, many important pages on the Internet are not properly "optimized", and many of the people who couldn't care less about spending their time on linking campaigns create some of the best content.
Google SitemapsTherefore, Google gives you the ability to tell them on a scale of 0.0 to 1.0 how important a given page is relative to all the others. Using this system, you might tell Google that your home page is a 1.0, each of your product sections is a 0.8, and each of your individual product pages is a 0.5. Pages like your company's address and contact information might only rate a 0.2.
You can also tell Google how often your pages are updated and the date that each page was last modified. For example your home page might be updated every day, while a particular product page might only be updated on an annual basis.
What Google Can Tell You About Your Site
Having the ability to tell Google all this information is important, but you don't even need to create a sitemap file in order to enjoy some of the perks of having a Google Sitemaps account.
That's because even without a Sitemap file, you can still learn about any errors that Googlebot has found on your website. But the best part of the Sitemaps program is the Page analysis section that was added in February of 2006. This page gives you two lists of words. The first list contains the words that Googlebot associates with your website based on content on your site. The second list contains words that Googlebot has found linking to your site!
Unfortunately, Google limits the number of words in each list to 20. As a consequence, the inbound links column is partly wasted by words such as "http", "www", and "com" - terms that apply equally to all websites (hey Google, how about suppressing those terms from the report?). That said, this list does provide you with a way to judge the effectiveness of your offsite optimization efforts.
When you compare these two lists, you can get an understanding of what Google thinks your website is about. If the words on your Site Content column are not really what you want Googlebot to think about your site, then you know you need to tweak your website's copy to make it more focused on your core competency.
If, on the other hand your inbound links don't contain any keywords that you want to rank well for, then perhaps you should focus your efforts in that direction.
Above all else, you really want these two lists to agree. You want your inbound linked words to match up to the site content words. This means that Google has a clear understanding of the focus of your website.
Additional Benefits of the Sitemaps Program
Google has even started notifying Sitemaps-participating Webmasters if they are breaking any of Google's Webmaster Guidelines. This can be very valuable information if your site suddenly becomes de-listed on Google and you don't know why.
Only Sitemaps participants can get this information, and it is only provided at Google's discretion. In fact, Google will NOT notify you if you are creating worthless websites that offer no original content, or if you are creating thousands of doorway pages that are redirecting to other web sites. Google doesn't want to give the sp@ammers any clues as to how to improve their techniques.
Google SitemapsHow Do You Get Started with Google Site Maps?
The first thing you must do is obtain a Google Account. If you already have a Gmail, Adsense, or AdWords account, then you are all set. If not, you can register an account by visiting the Google Accounts page (https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount).
Building your sitemap file is pretty easy to do if you are familiar with XML, and if you aren't you can always use a third-party tool such as the ones that are listed on Google's website (http://code.google.com/sm_thirdparty.html). Google also has a "Sitemap Generator" that you can download and install on your server, but unless you are fairly adept at managing Python scripts, you should probably stick to the third-party tools.
At any rate, once you have your Google Account and your Sitemap file built, the rest is very easy. All you have to do is:
1. Log into your account (http://google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/siteoverview)
2. Type your website's URL into the "Add Site" box and click on "OK"
3. Click on the Manage Sites link for the website you are adding, and add your sitemap file to your account.

Having said that the Google AdWords system is still extremely powerful . Hey, if I could afford 5 dollars a click I would pay it, but I can't. I need to lower my advertising costs while at the same time generating as much targeted traffic to my site as possible.
Unfortunately, my experience with their support system does not paint as rosy a picture of the mighty Google . In general, their online information is pretty good. It will solve your routine questions such as "when exactly does my credit card get billed? ) " quite well.
Google's support system seems geared towards keeping you off the phone with them. They like to refer to their repository of online documentation and use template driven email communication.
In instances where I needed specific information (i.e. why is this keyword disabled even though I created a brand new campaign to put it in?) I received "canned" emails with my support persons name "pasted" into the email.
Often times I was required to send them another email asking if they had even read my first one and to get the answer I was REALLY looking for.
At the end of the day I was left feeling that eventually my problem was going to be solved I just wasn't sure when that was going to be and how many times I would have to contact them in order to get the answer I really wanted.
Typical Costs associated with Running an AdWords Campaign
There's two ways to approach this:

Do you want to leverage someone else's experience and invest money in a company that can manage your AdWords campaigns?
Let me suggest that you manage your own accounts at least in the beginning . Start small and start collecting reference materials while you learn how the system works.
Search for other products and resources that can help you but keep in mind some of them won't work out . Don't let that stop your research, there is material out there that can truly help you and save you a lot of money.
Investing in a $40 e-book is a lot cheaper than blowing $500 or more with Google while you are learning the ropes .
Having said that if you want to get a successful campaign started now you can enlist an SEO company to manage your AdWords campaigns.
The question is: How will you know who to trust?
You can burn several thousand dollars for overpriced, untargeted traffic if you let the wrong companies manage your campaifns. How can anyone honestly know what to look for in an AdWords Management company if you haven't even tried the system out for yourself? Food for thought. If you manage your own campaigns at first you will get a feel for the system.
Campaign Costs
Ok, let's talk about the typical costs you can expect running a Google AdWords campaign. The good news is Google AdWords gives you the potential to reach millions of surfers in a matter of minutes for pretty much as little money as you want to spend.

The bad news is after the novelty of having an AdWords account and setting up your first few campaigns wears off it can begin to feel like a ball and chain. There are a lot of monotonous tasks that have to be managed daily and it can be a tough thing to manage unless you are a disciplined person.
Before you spend money on campaigns and resources acquire this mental discipline. Realize before you begin that it isn't going to be fun after a while. Google AdWords is a business tool, one of many, and as such it has it's advantages and flaws . It can make you a lot of money or it can cost you a lot of money and create a lot of stress for you depending on your ability to consistently manage your campaigns.
Ok, your minimum initial deposit is $5 to get started as we learned above. Start here, and I ruggest resisting the urge to JUMP in and start spending like crazy... stay at or near this $5-$50 level of investment until you use it up .
You're not going to see any returns on this investment financially but you will gain valuable knowledge of how best to use the Google AdWords System to generate income without learning the hard way.
You have a lot of learning to do before you want to start pouring money into your account. Google is in the business of making money and their system makes it "REALLY" easy to spend as much as you want.
Minimum bids start at a reasonable $0.05 USD. After developing your keyword list and dumping it into Google's system you have to start making financial decisions.
If you take Google's suggested bid prices for your keyword list you can pay a lot of money for your web traffic depending on how large your keyword list is and how much traffic these keywords generate.
Rest assured Google's system will provide you a lot of traffic quickly if you want to pay for it. It's not uncommon for Google's big management system to suggest max bids in the $20 - $30 range.
You don't have to accept these outrageous suggestions of course so your first big money saver is to lower the max bid to something you find acceptable and enter it for all of your keywords.
Please note Google's system will not charge you this full amount unless someone else is willing to pay that much for the keyword. Leave this number set higher if you want to produce a lot of clicks quickly.
Bidding into position's 1-3 will deliver the most traffic, but will be less targeted than position's 4-6.
Google Adwords PayPosition 1 will get the most clicks but many of these clicks will be untargeted "impulse" clicks. Taking the time to scan all the way to position 6 in the listing and click on the advertisement at that position suggests that the searcher is extremely interested in the subject being advertised.
Over time you will learn which keywords are making you money and which one's are simply too competitive for your budget. Google's campaign tracking abilities in conjunction with other 3rd party ad tracking software can help you identify these profitable keywords and track your website visitors.
Unfortunately every system can only provide so much traffic and you will find the larger companies can afford to bid pretty high for more general, high traffic keywords because they can afford it.
Large companies will pay $5 for general keywords like "credit cards" because they know over the lifetime of using a credit card they will recover their investment.
The big boys can squeeze you out of the Google AdWords World just as easily as in the "real world". Of course it's not all "doom and gloom". You still have a powerful and relatively inexpensive tool in your hands if you can exploit niches and find the "bargain" keywords.
Google's system of tools leaves you high and dry in this respect unless you have a lot of money to blow on "throwing out a wide net" by trying a large keyword list and then refining your campaigns as you start to get clicks and track your conversions.
You can get a lot of garbage clicks by bidding your way to the top for general keywords . This is expensive, less targeted, and lower converting than if you bid to position 3-5 or spend time finding the less expensive niche keywords (using your third party software or e-book techniques).

Chances are when bidding on more general high traffic keywords you will be competing with large companies and competitors using SEO company services to manage their campaigns.
These companies can afford to pay a lot more than you or I for their clicks. In order to counteract this you need to tightly target your campaigns and find niche keyphrases to be profitable with Google. I can't stress this enough.
To make proper decisions you will need to gather as much data as you can on how the AdWords system works. Obviously, you won't have this data until you run a campaign or two which is why I suggest running your own AdWords Campaigns for a while to get familiar with their system.
Study the stats provided by Google which are really quite good in conjunction with one or more 3rd party stats tracking packages.
You will start to notice trends in the numbers which will allow you to make more effective use of your time and money by bidding only on the keywords that are generating sales.
Analysis may also prompt you to tweak your site content if you notice a niche you want to start competing for (better yet start up another site or tier two web page on your site targeting that niche and remove these keywords from the original campaign moving them into a new campaign pointing to your new content).
Minor tweaks can save you BIG money using AdWords
Some Notes on Scalability:
Google allows you to bid on 3 types of keyword matching options which immediately gives you three times the keywords to bid on without any more brainstorming on your part.
Each matching option provides different results and should be managed on a keyword by keyword basis.
Google also provides two methods of displaying your ad on their network: Content Match Listings and Search Network Listings .
Effectively this allows you the potential to be noticed by:
1) anyone searching on Google's portal
2) anyone searching portal sites that get their search results from Google
3) anyone viewing a site displaying Google's ads that has content related to the keywords you bid on.
4) anyone reading an email with content related to your keyword at Google's free email service Gmail.
That's a lot of options and a lot of potential exposure. Tweaking to find the right combination for your particular situation and spending requirements is something you simply have to do on an ongoing basis. I think the benefits are obvious to you by now.
A final word on costs. You may have noticed that I didn't use a lot of numbers in my discussion of campaign costs with Google. What I think I have illustrated is a Google campaign truly can cost as little or as much as you want it to.
It can get you as much or as little traffic as you want it to. What kind of traffic it brings and how much it costs is up to you.
Where will your ads be displayed? More places than you might think:
At the time of publication AOL, Netscape, Ask Jeeves, AT&T Worldnet, EarthLink and Excite all get some or all of their search results from Google.
Content Match Listings vs. Search Network Listings
When user's do a search on one of the Google family of portal sites your paid listings appear either along the top of the search results highlighted as sponsored listings or to the right of the actual search results in text boxes.
Your position on these search pages is determined by your keyword list and your bid for that keyword.
Your results with the Search Network Listings can be quite successful as long as you manage your account using some of the techniques suggested in this article.
Use the included Geo-targeting capabilities built into the AdWords system to ensure your ads display only in areas that are potential customers for you.
Google Adwords Pay
Content match listings appear as inserts on web pages not in search engine results pages. My experiences with the content Match Listings haven't been as successful as with the Search Network Listings although I still use this option for some of my campaigns.
Google's system analyses the content of web page and serves up ads to those pages based on the what it feels the page is about . A web page on motorcycles may feature ads about buying motorcycles, motorcycle catalogues, parts distributors ... I think you get the idea.
And this idea is a good one since the ads it displays are usually pretty close to what you would think they should be. When you display ads on your website using Google's AdSense program for example, you are effectively joining their content network.
A drawback to the content matching system is you can't really know who is clicking on your ad. It could even be a competitor clicking on your ad from their own site! Google gives you the option of disabling either of these display methods if they aren't working out for you with the click of a button.
You can do this on a campaign by campaign basis only enabling/disabling what is working for you. If you want to minimize your risk but still utilize the Content Matching system you do have an option.
You can set up a separate campaign with lower bid prices for your keywords and only enable content matching for this campaign. Remove the content matching option from your original campaign and voila! you've minimized your risk.
A few more notes on Google Campaign Optimization
I can't stress enough the importance of getting a good Click Through Ratio (CTR) for your best target keywords. Google has really offered you a chance to save some big time money if you know how to get a good CTR for your ads and keywords.
Getting a good CTR allows Google to sell more ad space which makes them more money. Google transfers some of this money to you the advertiser by increasing your ranking within their search results it displays for your keywords, at no additional cost.
That's right, if you can write relevant ads for your target keywords you don't necessarily have to pay the higher bid prices for those keywords that your competitors are paying. More money saved!
Advantages of the Google AdWords System
- Highly configurable system with an intuitive web-based interface.
- Reporting system is near real-time so you can tweak campaigns on the fly
Google Adwords Pay
- Since their system is web based you can access your account at any time.
- Good list of Free tools and guides (although third party tools may still be required)
- Rewards advertisers that pay attention to providing relevant content to their search clients not necessarily the highest bidder. Get a better CTR and your ads are cheaper.
- Geo-targeting capabilities. Target by City, Country or display your ads Globally.
- Multiple ad delivery systems. Content and Search listings, Partner Network listings, Email.
- Multiple keyword matching options including the ability to 'filter' keywords.
- Reasonable minimum startup cost of $5 with no monthly minimum spend requirements
- They have licensed their search results to several other large search engines improving your web site's exposure to people that don't use Google as their main search portal.
- Free ROI tracking tools.
- Minimum bid is a reasonable $0.05 USD.
Disadvantages of the Google AdWords System
- Learning curve can cost you a lot of money.
- Not the most expensive PPC search engine but certainly more expensive than all other PPCs except Yahoo-Overture
- Click fraud is an unavoidable risk.
- Content matching system does not always deliver the same ROI as their search listings. If both ad delivery systems are enable for a particular campaign the content match results can lower your overall campaign CTR and get keywords disabled.
- Support system is email template driven. It can take you a few tries to get the information you REALLY need from Google's support.
- Interface does not indicate what your competitors are bidding, only the maximum bid for any particular keyword, making the implementation of bidding strategies much more difficult.

Cracking the Google Code: Under the GoogleScope

Google's sweeping changes confirm the search giant has launched a full out assault against artificial link inflation & declared war against search engine spam in a continuing effort to provide the best search service in the world... and if you thought you cracked the Google Code and had Google all figured out ... guess again.
Google has raised the bar against search engine spam and artificial link inflation to unrivaled heights with the filing of a United States Patent Application 20050071741 on March 31, 2005.
The filing unquestionable provides SEO's with valuable insight into Google's tightly guarded search intelligence and confirms that Google's information retrieval is based on historical data.
What exactly do these changes mean to you? Your credibility and reputation on-line are going under the Googlescope! Google has defined their patent abstract as follows:
A system identifies a document and obtains one or more types of history data associated with the document. The system may generate a score for the document based, at least in part, on the one or more types of history data.
Google's patent specification reveals a significant amount of information both old and new about the possible ways Google can (and likely does) use your web page updates to determine the ranking of your site in the SERPs.
Unfortunately, the patent filing does not prioritize or conclusively confirm any specific method one way or the other.
Here's how Google scores your web pages.
In addition to evaluating and scoring web page content, the ranking of web pages are admittedly still influenced by the frequency of page or site updates. What's new and interesting is what Google takes into account in determining the freshness of a web page.
For example, if a stale page continues to procure incoming links, it will still be considered fresh, even if the page header (Last-Modified: tells when the file was most recently modified) hasn't changed and the content is not updated or 'stale'.
According to their patent filing Google records and scores the following web page changes to determine freshness.
·The frequency of all web page changes
·The actual amount of the change itself... whether it is a substantial change redundant or superfluous
·Changes in keyword distribution or density
·The actual number of new web pages that link to a web page
·The change or update of anchor text (the text that is used to link to a web page)
·The numbers of new links to low trust web sites (for example, a domain may be considered low trust for having too many affiliate links on one web page).
Although there is no specific number of links indicated in the patent it might be advisable to limit affiliate links on new web pages. Caution should also be used in linking to pages with multiple affiliate links.
GoogleScope
Developing your web page augments for page freshness.
Now I'm not suggesting that it's always beneficial or advisable to change the content of your web pages regularly, but it is very important to keep your pages fresh regularly and that may not nebessarily mean a content change.
Google states that decayed or stale results might be desirable for information that doesn't necessarily need updating, while fresh content is good for results that require it.
How do you unravel that statement and differentiate between the two types of content?
An excellent example of this methodology is the roller coaster ride seasonal results might experience in Google's SERPs based on the actual season of the year.
A page related to winter clothing may rank higher in the winter than the summer... and the geographical area the end user is searching from will now likely be considered and factored into the search results.
Likewise, specific vacation destinations might rank higher in the SERPs in certain geographic regions during specific seasons of the year. Google can monitor and score pages by recording click through rate changes by season.
Google is no stranger to fighting Spam and is taking serious new measures to crack down on offenders like never before.
Section 0128 of Googles patent filing claims that you shouldn't change the focus of multiple pages at once.
Here's a quote from their rationale:
"A significant change over time in the set of topics associated with a document may indicate that the document has changed owners and previous document indicators, such as score, anchor text, etc., are no longer reliable.
Similarly, a spike in the number of topics could indicate spam. For example, if a particular document is associated with a set of one or more topics over what may be considered a 'stable' period of time and then a (sudden) spike occurs in the number of topics associated with the document, this may be an indication that the document has been taken over as a 'doorway' document.
GoogleScope
Another indication may include the sudden disappearance of the original topics associated with the document. If one or more of these situations are detected, then [Google] may reduce the relative score of such documents and/or the links, anchor text, or other data associated the document."
Unfortunately, this means that Google's sandbox phenomenon and/or the aging delay may apply to your web site if you change too many of your web pages at once.
From the case studies I've conducted it's more likely the rule and not the exception.
What does all this mean to you?
Keep your pages themed, relevant and most importantly consistent. You have to establish reliability! The days of spamming Google are drawing to an end.
If you require multi page content changes implement the changes in segments over time. Continue to use your original keywords on each page you change to maintain theme consistency.
You can easily make significant content changes by implementing lateral keywords to support and reinforce your vertical keyword(s) and phrases. This will also help eliminate keyword stuffing.
Make sure you determine if the keywords you're using require static or fresh search results and update your web site content accordingly. On this point RSS feeds may play a more valuable and strategic role than ever before in keeping pages fresh and at the top of the SERPs.
The bottom line here is webmasters must look ahead, plan and mange their domains more tightly than ever before or risk plummeting in the SERPs.
Does Google use your domain name to determine the ranking of your site?
Google's patent references specific types of 'information relating to how a document is hosted within a computer network' that can directly influence the ranking of a specific web site. This is Google's way of determining the legitimacy of your domain name.
Therefore, the credibility of your host has never been more important to ranking well in Google's SERP's.
Google states they may check the information of a name server in multiple ways.
Bad name servers might host known spam sites, adult and/or doorway domains. If you're hosted on a known bad name server your rankings will undoubtedly suffer... if you're not blacklisted entirely.
What I found particularly interesting is the criteria that Google may consider in determining the value of a domain or identifying it as a spam domain; According to their patent, Google may now record the following information:
·The length of the domain registration... is it greater than one year or less than one year?
·The address of the web site owner. Possibly for returning higher relevancy local search results and attaching accountability to the domain.
·The admin and the technical contact info. This info is often changed several times or completely falsified on spam domains; again this check is for consistency!
·The stability of your host and their IP range... is your IP range associated with spam?
Google's rationale for domain registration is based on the premise that valuable domains are often secured many years in advance while domains used for spam are rarely secured for more than a year.
If in doubt about a host's integrity I recommend checking their mail server at http://www.dnsstuff.com to see if they're in the spam database. Watch for red flags!
If your mail server is listed you may have a problem ranking well in Google!
Securing a reputable host can and will go a long way in promoting your web site to Google.
The simplest strategy may be registering your domain several years in advance with a reputable provider thereby demonstrating longevity and accountability to Google. Google wants to see that you're serious about your site and not a flash in the pan spam shop.

Googles Aging Delay has teeth... and they're taking a bite out of spam!
It's no big secret that Google relies heavily on links when it comes to ranking web sites.
According to their patent filing, Google may record the discovery date of a link and link changes over time.
In addition to volume, quality & the anchor text of links, Google's patent illustrates possible ways how Google might use historical information to further determine the value of links.
For example, the life span of a link and the speed at which a new web site gets links.
"Burst link growth may be a strong indicator of search engine spam".
This is the first concrete evidence that Google may penalize sites for rapid link acquisition. Whether the "burst growth" rule applies to high trust/authoritative sites and directory listings remains unknown. I personally haven't experienced this phenomenon. What's clear for certain though is the inevitable end to results orientated link farming.
I would point out here that regardless of whether burst link growth will be tolerated for authoritative sites or authoritative link acquisition, webmasters will have to get smarter and work harder to secure authoritative links as their counterparts become reluctant to exchange links with low trust sites. Now Page Rank really has value!
Relevant content swaps may be a nice alternative to the standard link exchange and allow you some control of the link page elements.
So what else does Google consider in determining the aging delay?

·The anchor text and the discovery date of links are recorded, thus establishing the countdown period of the aging delay.
·Links with a long-term life span may be more valuable than links with a short life span.
·The appearance and disappearance of a links over time.
·Growth rates of links as well as the link growth of independent peer pages. Again, this suggests that rapid link acquisition and the quality of peer pages are monitored.
·Anchor text over a given period of time for keyword consistency.
·Inbound links from fresh pages... might be considered more important than links from stale pages.
·Google doesn't expect that new web sites have a large number of links so purchasing large numbers of brokered links will likely hurt you more than help you. Google indicates that it is better for link growth to remain constant and naturally paced. In addition, the anchor text should be varied as much as possible.
·New web sites should not acquire too many new links; it'll be tolerated if the links are from trusted sites but it may be considered spam.
So how do you build your link popularity / Page Rank and avoid penalties?
When it comes to linking, you should clearly avoid the hocus pocus or magic bullet linking schemes. If you participate in quick fix link exchange scams, use automated link exchange software or buy htndreds of links at once, chances are Google will interpret your efforts as a spam attempt and act accordingly.
Don't get caught in this trap... the recovery period could be substantial since your host and IP range are also considered!
When you exchange links with other web sites, do it slowly and consistently.
Develop a link management and maintenance program. Schedule regular times every week to build the links to your site and vary the anchor text that points to your site.
Obviously, the links to your site should utilize your keywords. To avoid repetition use lateral keywords and keyword phrases in the anchor text since Google wants to see varied anchor text!
Your sites click through rate may now monitored through bookmarks, cache, favorites, and temporary files.
It's no big secret that Google has always been suspected of rewarding sites with higher click through rates (very similar to what Google does with their AdWords program) so it shouldn't come as a great surprise that Google still considers site stickiness and CTR tracking in their criterion.
What's interesting though is Google is interested in tracking the behavior of web surfers through bookmarks, cache, favorites, and temporary files (most likely with the Google toolbar and/or the Google desktop search tool). Google's Patent filing indicates Google might track the following information:
·Click through rates are monitored for changes in seasonality, fast increases, or other spike traffic in addition to increase or decrease trends.
·The volume of searches over time is recorded and monitored for
increases.
·The information regarding a web page's rankings are recorded and monitored for changes.
·Click through rates are monitored to find out if stale or fresh web pages are preferred for a search query.
·The traffic to a web page is recorded and monitored for changes... like Alexa.
·User behavior may be monitored through bookmarks, cache, favorites, and temporary files.
·Bookmarks and favorites could be monitored for both additions and deletions, and;
·The overall user behavior for trends and changes.
Since Google is capable of tracking the click-through rates to your web site, you should make sure that your web pages have attractive titles and utilize calls to action so that web surfers click on them in the search results.
It's also important to keep your visitors there so make your web pages interesting enough so that web surfers stay some time on your web site. It might also help if your web site visitors added your web site to their bookmarks.
As you can see, Google's new ranking criterion has evolved far beyond the reliance of criteria that can be readily or easily manipulated. One thing is for certain with Google, whatever direction search innovation is going; you can trust Google to be pioneering the way and setting new standards!

If Google Sculpting is Dead Then SEO Must Be on Life Support?

I have always thought of SEO as optimizing your content, both on-site and off-site, so that it ranks at the top of the search engines. Promoting your content or site should never be a crime in the eyes of Google or any search engine for that matter.
Years ago, before I even knew what SEO was, I wrote an article and submitted it to the major online article directories. Next morning my article and links were on a thousand sites across the web, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but you get the picture. How can Google or anyone fault webmasters for voting on the quality of your content by placing it on their sites?
Same thing happens when your visitors bookmark, tweet or digg your content and you end up on the homepage of Digg with hundreds of sites linking to your content. How can Google fault you for that happening?
Democracy happens. SEO happens.
But not without a lot of promotion and marketing to get the wheels rolling. If you want to sit around and wait for things to happen, buy a big soft cushion and some extra patience at the check-out counter because you're going to need it.
Any business has the right to advertise, to aggressively market their products. How can Google fault any company for doing such a thing? Now outright buying of thousands of links to get your site to the top should be wrong but presenting quality link bait in the form of articles, videos, ebooks, press releases, quality information... and letting webmasters decide what content and sites they want to link to should be at the heart of all this foolishness.
SEO is knowing how to fine-tune your link bait and your site to reach the top spot in organic search.
But is Google cracking down on webmasters who actively pursue this kind of link building? On webmasters who try to get those embedded anchor text links on important relevant sites? Are they trying to give SEO a bad name? Like that's even possible!
Over the years, my sites have held some very profitable keywords on the first page results in organic search, mostly in Google. That's mainly because I optimize my content and web pages to rank well in Google. I have been quietly Google Sculpting for years, controlling what links I want on their first page results.
SEO Must Be on Life Support
Actually, ranking well in Google is not rocket science and any idiot can do it; all it takes is good quality content and plenty of good quality backlinks to that content. Anchor text (underlined clickable part of an URL) is extremely important for ranking high in Google but you have to be careful to vary your keywords because many SEO experts believe Google has a keyword quota -- use the same keyword too often and your content will be penalized for keyword and/or URL spamming. Makes sense.
Actually, I have been studying and analyzing Google since it was merely an itch on someone's back. And it seems like I have been constantly rubbing that ever changing Algorithm ever since. Generally, it has paid off handsomely for me and I have been a full-time professional search engine marketer for 3 or 4 years now.
I am rarely stumped by Google but it does happen occasionally. And recently my SEO alter ego took a massive beating, some kind of filter has taken one of my main keyword phrases off the first page of Google and landed it in the 60th place. Ouch!
What is even compounding the problem, this keyword phrase sometimes bounces back onto the first page and then back off again. This is not like Google, they are never erratic unless it's one of their dances or a major update when all hell usually breaks loose. For the most part, my keywords in Google have been fairly stable, if they drop, they drop slowly and because I have stopped promoting them. Years of monitoring your keywords tells you something very different is happening here in this case.

It is totally frustrating when Google won't do what you want them to do! Usually they are so easy to lead and they take directions so well. However, this recent erratic keyword bouncing in Google has me so perplexed I am stumbling to find possible reasons. I am jumping to conclusions way too quickly.
In my case, Google was listing both my main index homepage and my optimized page for the same keyword phrase. This appears to be diluting the ranking of both pages. The optimized page was at around 50 and my homepage came in at the 95 spot. However, this seems to be more my mistake than Google's, since I inadvertently placed the same keyword phrase in links on my homepage going to other interior pages and not necessarily to my main optimized page which I wanted and which is usually ranked in Google for this keyword phrase.
Let me explain further, I develop sections/guides on my site that are keyworded to different markets generally relating to the theme of my site or domain. For the keyword phrase in question, I have a well established page that's linked from hundreds of related sites around the web; this is the page that should be ranked for this keyword phrase since it is the most relevant, not my homepage. Likewise, on my own site I have constructed my pages so that PR flows to this optimized page. For years, this optimized interior page held the number one spot in Google.
Could this possibly have something to with regards to PageRank Sculpting, which Matt Cutts spoke about in a recent blog post? If PR sculpting no longer works on my site, can this be causing the erratic bouncing of that particular keyword but if this is true -- why aren't my other keywords turning into bungee cord wannabes?

Now there could be separate filters at play here and the above scenario has nothing to do with these bouncing keywords within Google. It seems to be connected with URL spamming in some form or manner, even when those links are legitimate links coming from quality sites. It seems Google's Algorithm has become so sophisticated and complex, it probably has developed a mind of its own and nobody can tell it what to do.
However, it is always rather foolish to draw conclusions regarding Google on just a few erratic keywords. But something definitely has changed in how Google is ranking those keywords - could it be that PageRank Sculpting or even Google Sculpting is killing the old tried and true SEO techniques. I am seeing a lot more Brand Rankings in the SERPs which Aaron Wall talked about a little while back; I am also seeing much more relevance on News listings, more relevance on Video listings... can Google be shaking up the whole ranking order?
Rumor has it that many top Google big-wigs are upset with the introduction of Microsoft's Bing into the search arena. That orders have gone out to shake up and improve Google's Algorithm... to further combat this pesty new competition.

You will see Bing is not half bad - whether it can give Google a run for its search dollar money is still up in the air but it could definitely eat into Google's share of the search market. I am seeing Bing turning up in my own traffic stats with a lot more traffic than I get from MSN or Windows Live; now it's no where near the amount of traffic Google delivers but still it more than what was there before Bing launched.
All this shouldn't give Google any sleepless nights but Google can't afford to take too many catnaps if it wants to keep its dominance in online search.
Could all these background events be playing into Google's shakeup of how it lists popular lucrative keywords. I am not seeing the same kind of movement in my other less profitable keywords. Can Google be hand-picking certain lucrative keywords and applying different standards or filters to those keywords? Are there "human eyes" filtering Google's organic rankings? Extremely hard to believe with Google's well deserved reputation, but something is definitely not routine as usual in the Kingdom of Google?
It now seems to rank high for certain lucrative keywords in Google, you MUST have TWO highly ranked optimized pages instead of JUST one?
SEO Must Be on Life Support
Is this a new and more powerful ranking factor which overrules most other factors? It's my most burning SEO question at the moment. What has caused that keyword to drop so far, so fast? And why does this keyword phrase seem to be in Everflux, with new listings jumping unto the first page every day. The rankings/listings are much, much more fluid than they used to be; if Google ranks all its keywords in this fluctuating manner, SEO may indeed be dead. At least whitehat SEO where the webmaster is doing everything according to the rules.
Again, this is micro-reasoning on my part since all this could be just some filters holding my keywords back or recent activity from competing sites have suddenly increased and my rankings have naturally dropped when compared to them. But I have held that keyword for years in Google, how dare other sites take my spot? For the other sites to gain so quickly and for mine to fall so fast and so far has me scratching my head. Something just doesn't smell right in the land of Google?
Could something more sinister be going on? Could someone be Google Sculpting my links in the opposite direction? Since it's so easy to sculpt or convince Google to list your page, can it be just as easy for someone to use underhand methods to get your page or site ranked lower? Spam your link on thousands of nasty sites or simply get you ranked for two pages for the same keyword, one of them that's poorly optimized such as your homepage so as to pull both of them down lower. This is too laughable and too paranoid to entertain, or is it?
Regardless, I have learned long ago, SEO has to be taken with a large grain of salt. Besides, this is just one of thousands of keywords I am monitoring. Win or lose, I am having the time of my life, even when Google goes erratic and won't do what I want them to do. After all, when everything is said and done; SEO means never having to say you're sorry!
